AI Readiness Assessment: 6 Questions to Answer Before You Build

An AI readiness assessment checks whether your data, systems, people and governance can support an AI use case before you build it. Score six areas: business outcome, data, system integration, governance, skills and measurement. A weak area is far cheaper to fix before the build than after.
What is an AI readiness assessment?
It is a structured check of whether your organization can run a specific AI use case in production, not only in a demo.
Why assess readiness before you build?
Because most blockers are found too late. Dun & Bradstreet's 2026 survey of 10,000 businesses found that 97 percent have active AI initiatives, but only 5 percent say their data is adequately ready to support them. Respondents named limited data access (50 percent), data quality and integrity concerns (40 percent) and lack of integration across systems (38 percent) as leading obstacles. Our guide to why most AI pilots never scale shows how these problems surface after launch.
H2: What are the six questions to ask?
What business outcome will change, and how will we measure it?
Does the data exist, is it accurate and can the system access it?
Can the AI read from and write to the systems it needs?
Who can see and change what, and what happens when the AI is wrong?
Do we have people who can build, run and review it?
What result will we check, and by what date?
Read our guide to building a data architecture that AI can actually use for questions 2 and 3, and our piece on data governance for AI for question 4. If your plan involves systems that take actions, not just answer questions, read our overview of agentic AI first.
How do you score the results?
Rate each question red, amber or green. A red on questions 1 to 4 means fix it before building. Give every amber an owner and a date. Start with one use case, not the whole company, so you learn from real results quickly. P99Soft's Data and AI services team runs these assessments and builds the foundations they point to.
FAQs
How long does an AI readiness assessment take?
It depends on the number of systems and teams involved. A single use case takes far less time than an enterprise-wide review.
Do we need perfect data before starting?
No. You need data that is fit for the specific use case, with known gaps and an owner for each.
