Core AWS Services

AWS EC2 Instances: Flexibility and Scalability at Your Fingertips

AWS EC2 Instances

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) provides scalable computing capacity in the cloud. With EC2, you can launch as many or as few virtual servers as you need, configure security and networking, and manage storage. It provides on-demand, scalable computing power in the form of virtual machines (VMs). EC2 offers a wide range of instance types tailored to different workloads, from general-purpose to compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and GPU instances and pay only for what you use.

Key Features:
  • Auto Scaling: Automatically adjusts the number of instances in response to demand.
  • Elastic Load Balancing: Distributes incoming traffic across multiple instances for better fault tolerance.
  • Varied Pricing Models: Choose from On-Demand, Reserved, and Spot Instances to optimize cost and performance

Amazon S3 Bucket: The Backbone of Cloud Storage

Amazon S3 Bucket

Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) is an object storage service that offers industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance. S3 is designed to store and retrieve any amount of data from anywhere on the website. It’s used for a wide variety of applications, including data backup, archival, content storage, and big data analytics in a cost-effective and easily accessible manner.

Key Features:
  • Durability and Availability: S3 is designed for 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability.
  • Storage Classes: Optimize costs with various storage classes like Standard, Intelligent-Tiering, and Glacier for infrequent access.
  • Security and Compliance: S3 provides comprehensive security and compliance capabilities, meeting stringent regulatory requirements.

VPC: Building Your Virtual Data Center

VPC

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) allows you to provision a logically isolated section of the AWS cloud where you can launch AWS resources in a virtual network that you define. This provides complete control over your virtual network environment, including IP address allocation, security groups, creation of subnets and configuration of route tables, network gateways and network access control lists (ACLs).

Key Features:

  • Subnet Segmentation: Separate your VPC into public and private subnets to improve security and manageability.
  • Network Access Control: Use security groups and network ACLs to control inbound and outbound traffic to your instances.
  • VPN Connectivity: Establish secure connections between your on-premises network and your AWS VPC.

Case Studies: AWS in Action

1. From Software Inc.: This developer, known for action game series like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, has been using AWS since 2012. For the highly anticipated release of Elden Ring in February 2022, they heavily relied on AWS to handle the massive influx of players.

  • Challenge: Elden Ring garnered immense hype, resulting in the potential for millions of concurrent players at launch. From Software needed a scalable and reliable infrastructure to handle the peak load without compromising performance.
  • Solution: The company utilized Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) and Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose for their backend. EKS provides a managed platform for running containerized applications, allowing From Software to easily scale their services up and down based on player traffic. Kinesis Data Firehose efficiently streamed game data to analytics services, enabling real-time monitoring and ensuring a smooth experience for players.
  • Results: The AWS infrastructure successfully handled the peak of 1.5 million concurrent connections at launch, allowing gamers to enjoy Elden Ring without encountering server issues.

2. Netmarble Nexus: This South Korean mobile game developer utilizes AWS for a variety of purposes, including game development, live operations, and data analytics.

  • Challenge: Netmarble Nexus needed a robust and scalable infrastructure to support their diverse portfolio of mobile games, ensuring smooth gameplay for a global audience.
  • Solution: The company leverages a wide range of AWS services, including Amazon EC2 for virtual machines, Amazon S3 for object storage, and Amazon CloudFront for content delivery. Additionally, they utilize AWS analytics services to gain insights from player data, allowing them to optimize game features and marketing strategies.
  • Results: By relying on AWS, Netmarble Nexus has achieved global reach and scalability for their mobile games. The platform’s flexibility allows them to adapt to changing user demands and ensures a high-quality gaming experience for players worldwide.
